Fees for Service
Terry Balding & Associates offers their clients the choice of
1) fee only,
2) fee based, or
3) commission based service.
Fee Only
The advisor receives fees directly from the client, and no other compensation of any kind, from any other source. The advantage of this method of payment is that it eliminates any potential conflict of interest that may come were additional compensation to be paid to the advisor from a source other than the client. The most common source of additional compensation is 12b-1 service fees from mutual funds. These are service fees designed to compensate the advisor for the cost of providing service. The disadvantage of this method is that it eliminates the use of many No-Load funds, and Load Funds that can be purchased with out the load.
Fee Based
A fee is paid to the advisor by the client, and in addition the advisor may receive 12b-1 fees or commissions. The advantage of this method is the unlimited number of investments available. The investor may purchase any No-Load or Load fund. Typically the advisor will buy load funds without the load, or credit the load against any fees due. The disadvantage is the possible conflict of interest.
Commission
The advisor is paid a commission to sell you a product. The advantage of this method is its low cost. You may pay one small commission to buy an investment and hold it all your life. The disadvantages are many. First it turns your "Advisor" into a sales person. Secondly, if you need to change investments, you will pay a commission again. This additional cost is a deterrent that may cause your advisor to be slow in recommending needed changes. The largest disadvantage is that an advisor who was paid once five years ago cannot spend much time on this account.
